Why is balance important in nature?
In the Autumn/Winter term of 2015, the year 8 expedition was Life in Balance.
The learning targets were :
- I can explain how plant cells are adapted for photosynthesis
- I can describe the process of photosynthesis using words and chemical equations
- I can use chemical formulas, equations and the rearrangement of atoms to explain Chemical reactions
- I can solve linear equations
Students began the expedition by watching the movie “An Inconvenient truth” with Al Gore as immersion.
They studied the carbon cycle in preparation for a fieldwork visit to Drax power station. Students looked further at the balance in nature by studying photosynthesis, and the underlying chemical equation at both elemental and atomic level.
Mathematically, they calculated linear equations, once again using the concept of balance in their solutions.
The expedition culminated with students designing and delivering a presentation to an authentic audience during a presentation of learning. This was in the theme of “an inconvenient truth”, and allowed us to evaluate and synthesise the key themes of the expedition.
