What am I made of? & Why do I get sick and how do I stop it?
In Year 7, our first STEM expedition of 2016 was called ‘That’s Sick!’.
The learning targets were :
- I can use a light microscope to make observations
- I can represent the organisational hierarchy of organisms
- I can explain how humans breathe
- I can describe the journey that food takes through the digestive system and how this leads to digestion.
- I can use ratios and proportions to determine what my body accomplishes each year.
- I can explain how increased surface area aids in digestion.
- I can define non-communicable disease and give examples.
- I can how different lifestyle choices can affect health and the onset of particular diseases
Students studied the composition of the human body starting at the microscopic scale by observing different types of cell, and then examined key organs and systems of the body. They then looked at different illnesses that can affect different organs and how this affects the body.
Students visited Doncaster Royal Infirmary for their immersion, where they met with Dr Yamani who showed them state of the art medical imaging equipment such as ultrasound and CT scanning which allowed them to look inside a living body to see how they are composed.
As a result of this work, students completed a piece of scientific writing along with a proportionally correct drawing of key organs. They wrote about the organ and how it is specialised for it’s function, and also described particular illnesses that could affect them.
This work was put together to form an information panel with exploded view diagram of the body which includes scientific information. Each class made two posters – one showing the Cardio-Respiratory System and one showing the Digestive system and donated them to the hospital where they are exhibited for members of the public to see
